Sinds de komst van de Europeanen staan zij symbool voor ongelijkheid. Europese kolonisten zagen de traditionele versiering van het zwarte lichaam met glazen kralen als primitief en minderwaardig. Met de kralensieraden werden Afrikanen herkenbaar als ‘de anderen’. Kuschels onderzoek kreeg vorm in een sieraad over verzet maar ook over verbinding. De rode en zwarte glaskralen zijn typisch Tsjechische kralen die door Europeanen naar Afrika werden gebracht om te verhandelen.
